Chef Biography

Helmut Sterreicher first apprenticed at Marchfelderhof in Deutsch Wagram as saucier and garde- manger chef before moving over two years later in 1975 to the Hotel Sacher in Vienna.  In 1978 he became the head chef at Steirereck which 10 years later became the best in Vienna by Christian Millau & Henri Gault of Gault-Millau, as well as 2 stars by Michelin.

In 1993 Mayor (Burgermeister) Dr Michael Haupt awarded him the “Goldenen Rathausmann” as well as the Culinary Prize by the European Union.  In 1998, the Great Chefs Television crew taped Chef Helmut for their Great Chefs of Austria series for the ORF Television Network (See photo with all Austrian chefs.  The four gentlemen not in chef’s uniform are: John Shoup, Executive Producer of Great Chefs/ Mayor Dr Michael Haupt/ Christian Millau & Henri Gault).

After Steirereck relocated in 2005 to a new location, Chef Sterreicher opened his own new restaurant  “Osterreicher im MAK” where he remains today in 2016
