Chef Biography

The husband and wife team of Al Forno’s, got the idea of starting a restaurant while living and traveling throughout Italy.  Johanne worked in a tiny restaurant outside of Florence, and George taught for Rhode Island School of Design in Rome, at the Palazzo Cenci.  They returned to Providence and opened Al Forno in 1980.

The Great Chefs television team showed up in October 1992 to tape them for their Great Chefs of the East series, for the Discovery Channel. They have won almost every award possible and are still going strong 35 years later, having fun.
