Chef Biography

Mary Sonnier was born in 1958 in Denver, Colorado but was raised in New Orleans until age 15.

After studying at Memphis State University, she returned to New Orleans in 1983 to study cooking and was hired as an apprentice to Chef Paul Prudhomme at his restaurant, K-Paul’s, in the French Quarter. She met her husband, Greg, at K-Paul’s and in 1988, she left to have their first child, Gabrielle.  In 1991, Mary and Greg opened their own restaurant, Gabrielle’s.

In May of 1992, the Great Chefs television crew descended upon Gabrielle’s to tape both Greg and Mary Sonnier for the Discovery Channel’s television series, Great Chefs – the Louisiana New Garde (episode # 3).

Gabrielle’s was closed by Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005, never to reopen again at that location.
